Our History

Fundación María was created to invest its resources in social initiatives that promote human development by improving the physical and structural conditions of healthcare services and implementing specialized units so that the most vulnerable children can receive dignified, high-quality care.

With over 26 years of work, we have mobilized resources, built strategic partnerships, and helped thousands of children access the treatment they deserve — regardless of their economic situation.

The foundation was founded by Mary de Flores, wife of former Honduran President Carlos Roberto Flores, after two decades of volunteer service in public hospitals and cultural initiatives. Today, Fundación María uses its influence to give children a healthy start in life by improving health centers, education, recreation, and sustainable development opportunities.

Mission and Vision

At Fundación María, we work with the firm belief that all children, due to their vulnerability, deserve access to comprehensive care that respects and protects their rights.
Our vision is to become a leading advocate for child health, ensuring that every child receives the support needed for their physical, emotional, and social development.

To achieve this, we focus on strengthening medical care, providing humanitarian aid, ensuring proper nutrition, and promoting holistic education through our social projects and programs, always prioritizing the most vulnerable areas and the pediatric population.

Our Programs and Areas of Impact

Little Hearts

The program was created to strengthen the Heart Unit and support the mission of Hospital María, Pediatric Specialties (HMEP).

Funds raised through Little Hearts go directly to helping these hearts that long for a second chance, heartbeats full of hope, life, and the chance to celebrate it.

Medicine and Supplies donations to HMEP:

Fundación María supports urgent medical needs at Hospital María, including the purchase of medications, surgical supplies, and the repair of specialized equipment.
This essential support strengthens the hospital’s operational capacity, allowing more children to receive timely, safe, and high-quality care.

Many pediatric patients and their families travel from rural areas to receive medical care at HMEP.
Fundación María supports Fundación Abrigo, a shelter that provides them with lodging, meals, and emotional support during their stay; ensuring that families can focus on their child’s recovery without worrying about their basic needs.

Little Hearts Club

It’s a student-led initiative that encourages the creation of clubs in schools to support the Little Hearts program.

Students organize fundraising and solidarity activities to benefit patients at HMEP. The initiative also aims to raise awareness about congenital heart disease in Honduras and to foster socially committed young leaders.

Little Hearts is a program led by Fundación María to provide life-saving heart surgeries to children with congenital heart defects in Honduras. The goal is simple: no child should go without treatment due to lack of resources.
Through this program, Fundación María channels the generosity of donors like you to transform a family’s fear into hope. The funds raised by Little Hearts go directly to these children; hearts longing for a second chance, full of hope, life, and the desire to celebrate their future.
